After being at university for three weeks now, I finally feel like I have settled in. I struggled a lot at first with the concept of living away from home, with people I don’t know in a completely different city (yikes!), but after wandering around and seeing Leicester it feels more and more like home every day.
My student accommodation is located a five minute walk away from the city centre which is extremely useful when you need some emergency retail therapy. Leicester also has Highcross, a large indoor shopping centre, which houses some of the best fashion retailers such as H&M, Zara, New Look and Urban Outfitters. Basically the Leicester equivalent to Meadowhall, but located in town (where there is also another H&M and New Look, eep!).I also live next to the Castle Gardens, which are lovely during Autumn. It’s a great place to walk through or sit when you’re feeling stressed, or just for getting to a lecture, or Tesco.
I am studying Media Production with 4 modules this year, including Social Media, Fundamentals, Media Capture and Processing and Multimedia (HTML). I felt REALLY overwhelmed with these at first, but having the lectures and labs has boosted my confidence in the subject already. My lecturers have bombarded us with coursework but the majority of it is hands-on and engaging, so I don’t mind at all. I am currently writing a report on the way the Internet allows us to present our media (which I should probably get back to instead of writing this…) which is pretty interesting.
I also joined the Dance society; so I now do Contemporary every Monday at 8pm. I was thrilled when I heard the society did contemporary dance, it is my absolute favourite type which I haven’t done for at least three years now. I also joined the TV strand of the media society-group-type thing, called Demon Media. I’ve already been involved in a show and at a pre-production meeting yesterday I landed the role of camera operator for an episode of a new series they are making.
However, no matter how much I’m settling in here, I still can’t wait to visit home next weekend!
